Raiders Fall Narrowly to No. 1 Chipola
NICEVILLE, Fla. — No. 4 Northwest Florida women's basketball went toe-to-toe with top-ranked Chipola on Saturday inside Raider Arena, matching the Indians for much of the afternoon and drawing even midway through the fourth quarter. A handful of missed chances down the stretch ultimately made the difference, as the Raiders slipped to 16-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.
Northwest Florida and Chipola traded punches from the opening tip in a tightly contested, physical matchup that featured multiple lead changes and momentum swings across all four quarters.
The Raiders struck first as Kamryn Corporan finished a layup just 26 seconds into the game, but Chipola responded immediately with a three from Talia Rietveld to grab a brief lead. Early foul trouble and turnovers kept both offenses from finding rhythm, resulting in a defensive-heavy first period. The quarter closed with Chipola holding a slim 16–15 edge.
Northwest Florida seized momentum early in the second quarter. A three from Aiko Toyomasu followed by another from Niylia Wilkins sparked a 6–0 Raiders run, pushing Northwest Florida in front 21–16. The Raiders continued to apply pressure, stringing together stops and quick baskets as Kayla Johnson scored six points in a two-minute span to extend the lead to 25–18. Chipola countered late in the half behind Jasmine Harris, trimming the deficit before Toyomasu buried a deep three in the final seconds. Despite a late Chipola bucket, Northwest Florida carried a narrow 32–33 deficit into halftime after a back-and-forth closing stretch.
The third quarter was a grind, with neither team able to separate. Chipola opened the half with an inside basket and free throw to regain the lead, but Northwest Florida responded with strong interior play from Corporan and Johnson to keep the game within one possession. Both teams traded baskets through the middle of the quarter, with Carter Jones knocking down a key three to answer another Chipola push. Defensive intensity ramped up on both sides, leading to several empty possessions. Northwest Florida finished the quarter strong, closing on a 7–2 run capped by a Johnson layup to take a 52–51 advantage into the final period.
Chipola opened the fourth quarter with urgency, hitting a three and converting turnovers into quick points to regain control. A 7–1 run pushed the Indians ahead 60–53 and forced a Northwest Florida timeout. The Raiders responded immediately, as Jadah White drilled a three out of the break to stop the bleeding. Northwest Florida clawed back possession by possession, eventually tying the game at 60–60 on a Johnson layup with 5:57 remaining.
From there, Chipola delivered the decisive stretch. Back-to-back baskets from Harris ignited an 8–0 run that gave the Indians a six-point cushion late. Northwest Florida continued to fight, trimming the margin to four on free throws and a late Diagne three with eight seconds remaining, but Chipola closed the door at the line in the final moments to secure the 71–67 victory.
Ka'Zahria Johnson led the Raiders offensively with a season-high 19 points. Kamry Corporan recorded her first career double-double, with 10 points and 12 assists for the game. Khoudia Diagne was solid offensively, scoring 15 points.
The Raiders shot 49.0% as a team, including 37.5% (6-16) from three. Rebounding was an issue as the Raiders were outworked 32-23. Both teams turned the ball over considerably—Chipola featured 17 turnovers while Northwest Florida committed 14.
The Raiders will be back at home Wednesday to take on Tallahassee at 5:15 p.m. The Eagles upset the Raiders by two last time they met, ending what was a 19 game win streak for the Raiders.
