Northwest Florida Signs Ohio State Transfer Alonzo Gaffney

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Northwest Florida men's basketball head coach Butch Pierre has announced the signing of Ohio State transfer Alonzo Gaffney.

The 6-9 forward from Cleveland was the No. 2 high school recruit out of Ohio and rated a top-50 national prospect by many publications. He played in 17 games for Ohio State last season and averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

"It's a great feeling to join a program like Northwest Florida and I can't wait to start the process of preparing for the season," Gaffney said. "I have a great a connection with Coach Pierre. The environment at NWF is great, it just felt like the right fit."

As a senior at Brewster Academy, Gaffney averaged 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. He was named All-Ohio after posting 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game at Garfield Heights High School as a junior.

Following his successful prep career, Gaffney received offers from Georgetown, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan State and others before opting for Ohio State. ESPN graded him out at 88 out of 100, listed him as a 4-star prospect and ranked him the No. 43 prospect in the nation. 247Sports rated Gaffney as a 4-star prospect and the No. 18 recruit in his class.

"He is a great addition to our program and will impact our team greatly," Pierre said. "He has incredible athleticism, the ability to make big time plays and defend all five positions. Alonzo has the potential to play at the next level, he's a game-changing player."
