McGowan Powers Raiders to Opening Round Win in Clearwater

CLEARWATER, Fla. — As expected, another matchup between Northwest Florida and Chipola delivered plenty of drama. In a back-and-forth battle featuring multiple lead changes and explosive offense from both sides, the Raiders came out on top with a thrilling 9-8 victory to open the FCSAA Tournament in Clearwater.

Northwest Florida found itself in an early 3-0 hole after Chipola plated three runs in the first inning, but the Raiders steadily chipped away. Karson McGowan got Northwest Florida on the board in the third with a two-run home run down the left field line, cutting the deficit to one.

The Raiders grabbed their first lead in the fourth inning after Jaci Garry delivered an RBI double to tie the game, followed by an Anna Grace Griggs sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. After Chipola evened the score in the fifth, Northwest Florida answered with consecutive RBI plays from Marlee Parsons and Falyn Beebe to reclaim a 6-4 advantage.

Chipola responded with a four-run sixth inning to retake the lead, 8-6, but the Raiders had one final answer. McGowan came through again with an RBI double to bring Northwest Florida within one before Savannah Carter tied the game with an RBI single. Moments later, Jaci Garry delivered what proved to be the game-winning run on a single to center, aided by a Chipola fielding error, giving the Raiders a 9-8 lead.

McGowan led the offensive charge, finishing 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits, including a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Haley Hughes also starred at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 and scoring once.

Northwest Florida's offense totaled 13 hits, including four extra-base hits. McGowan accounted for three of those, while Jaci Garry added the fourth with her sixth-inning double. Bre Hughes recorded the Raiders' lone stolen base of the contest.

Chipola was led offensively by Irene Rabasco, who finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth inning. Rabasco also drew two walks, while Emmalee Essary went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. The Indians collected seven hits as a team and showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks.

Northwest Florida used three pitchers in the victory. Savannah Carter started for the Raiders and later returned to close out the game, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing three earned runs to earn the save. Marlee Parsons and Mallory Baker combined for 2.1 innings of relief, with Baker earning the win.

Chipola starter Gratham worked 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits while striking out one. Skylar Brock recorded the final two outs in relief, surrendering one hit and one run.

Defensively, Northwest Florida played a clean game without committing an error, while Chipola was charged with two miscues.

With the win, the Raiders advance in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of Miami Dade and Santa Fe on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. (CDT). A victory would send Northwest Florida directly to Friday's championship game.
