Northwest Florida Falls at No. 12 Gulf Coast in Tight Road Battle
PANAMA CITY, Fla. — In another hard-fought, back-and-forth matchup between No. 8 Northwest Florida and No. 12 Gulf Coast, the Raiders came up short this time, falling 72–65 to the Commodores on the road. The loss sets up a must-win showdown Saturday against Chipola.
As expected, the game swung on runs. Gulf Coast opened the contest with a 12–0 burst in the opening minutes before Northwest Florida answered with a run of its own to trim the deficit back to single digits. Neither team found much offensive rhythm in the first half, as both hovered around the 40 percent mark from the field. Defense and rebounding were at a premium, with the teams combining for 44 rebounds and six steals in the opening half.
Northwest Florida closed the half strong, using a 9–3 run in the final minutes to cut the margin to four, heading into the break trailing 36–32.
The Commodores held a narrow edge early in the second half until the Raiders surged once again. Northwest Florida rattled off a 10–0 run to take its first lead of the night, 47–42, forcing a Gulf Coast timeout. The Commodores responded immediately with a 13–0 run of their own to regain control. The Raiders countered with a 6–0 spurt to pull within two at 55–53, but Gulf Coast delivered the decisive blow with a transition three that gave them the lead. The Commodores would not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way.
Jonas Nichols led the Raiders with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, knocking down four three-pointers. Braylon Roman added 14 points, while Justin Burns chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.
Both teams finished under 40 percent shooting for the game. Gulf Coast won the rebounding battle 46–37, and while each side committed 10 turnovers, the Commodores capitalized for 18 points compared to just eight for the Raiders.
With the loss, Northwest Florida falls to 6–5 in league play and sits tied with Gulf Coast for third place. The Raiders now face a do-or-die matchup Saturday against No. 7 Chipola. A Northwest Florida win—or a Gulf Coast loss at Pensacola—would secure a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament in two weeks. If both teams win, a four-way tie for first place would be decided by Massey ratings, where Northwest Florida currently holds the top spot, followed by Gulf Coast and Chipola.
