Raiders Fall at Tallahassee, 73–69
TALLAHASSEE — Northwest Florida State College came up just short in another tightly contested Panhandle matchup Saturday, falling 73–69 to Tallahassee State College. The loss drops the Raiders to 5–4 in conference play and into a three-way tie with Tallahassee and Chipola with three games remaining in the regular season.
Tallahassee State established the tone early by controlling the glass, scoring the game's first basket on an offensive rebound and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities to build a narrow lead. Northwest Florida countered behind an early three from Jonas Nichols and strong interior play from Johnny Pierce, but neither team could create separation in a tightly contested first half. The Raiders briefly took a 23–21 lead midway through the period before Tallahassee State closed the half on an 11–2 run, fueled by transition buckets and finishes inside from Orion Wilson, to take a 39–33 advantage into the break.
Northwest Florida chipped away early in the second half, trimming the deficit to four before the Eagles answered with a timely three-pointer. The Raiders surged midway through the period, using defensive pressure and transition offense to reclaim the lead, 50–49, on a Braylon Roman layup. From there, the game swung possession by possession, with neither side leading by more than four over the final eight minutes.
DJ Shine sparked the Raiders late, knocking down a go-ahead jumper at the 4:15 mark to put Northwest Florida up 63–62. Tallahassee State responded with clutch free throws and key offensive rebounds, regaining control in the final three minutes. Nichols pulled the Raiders within one with a tough jumper with 13 seconds remaining, but the Eagles sealed the win at the line.
Justin Burns and Johnny Pierce paced Northwest Florida with 15 and 14 points, respectively, combining for 11 rebounds. Despite outshooting Tallahassee State from the field and beyond the arc, rebounding proved decisive, as the Eagles finished with a plus-eight advantage on the glass.
The loss completes a season sweep for Tallahassee State in what is shaping up to be a pivotal postseason push, with four teams battling for three playoff spots. Northwest Florida will have little room for error down the stretch, receiving a midweek bye before hosting Pensacola next Saturday, followed by a road trip to Gulf Coast and a regular-season finale at home against Chipola.
