Raiders Edge Commodores in Another Back-and-Forth Classic

NICEVILLE, Fla. — When Gulf Coast and Northwest Florida State share the floor, drama is almost guaranteed. After a thriller in the first meeting, Wednesday night's rematch delivered more of the same.

No. 10 Northwest Florida State once again came out on top, knocking off No. 3 Gulf Coast 84–74 at Raider Arena in a tightly contested battle that featured five lead changes and nine ties.

The Commodores set the tone early, racing out to a 16–7 lead behind sharp shooting from Trent Lincoln and Devontes Cobbs. Northwest Florida answered with toughness inside, as Justin Burns and Christian Reid ignited a mid-half push with second-chance opportunities and paint scoring. A late three from Jonas Nichols capped the surge, sending the Raiders into halftime trailing by just one, 42–41.

The second half unfolded much like the first, with neither side able to create separation. Gulf Coast briefly stretched its lead to five, but defensive stops and quick transition buckets allowed the Raiders to even the score at 48. From there, Northwest Florida found its offensive rhythm, leaning on Nichols, Burns, and Braylon Roman to keep constant pressure on the Commodores.

The decisive moment came in the final five minutes. With the score knotted at 72, Nichols buried a clutch three to give the Raiders the lead for good. Northwest Florida followed with strong rebounding and forced turnovers, converting them into points at the free-throw line. A late three from DJ Shine and a put-back from Roman sealed the win as the Raiders closed the game on a decisive run.

Nichols led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting, including two triples. Burns delivered a dominant two-way performance, finishing with 16 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks while missing just one shot. Damarion Vann-Kelly added a spark off the bench with 16 points, knocking down four threes and grabbing five rebounds. Roman rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and five boards.

Both teams were locked in offensively in the first half, each shooting 57 percent from the field. Northwest Florida carried that efficiency into the second half, finishing at 56 percent, while Gulf Coast cooled off, shooting just 36 percent after the break and 46 percent overall.

With the win, the Raiders move into a tie with Gulf Coast atop the Panhandle standings and now hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Northwest Florida opens the third and final round of conference play Saturday with a trip to Tallahassee to face the Eagles for the final time in the regular season, looking to regain momentum in a pivotal stretch of the schedule.
