Raiders Split Friday Doubleheader, Top Bishop State Before Falling to No. 5 Shelton State
NICEVILLE, Fla. — Northwest Florida State baseball split its Friday doubleheader at home, opening the day with a 10–5 win over Bishop State before dropping an 8–2 decision to No. 5 Shelton State in the nightcap.
Game One: Northwest Florida 10, Bishop State 5
Northwest Florida used a big third inning and a balanced offensive attack to pull away from Bishop State in the opener.
Brock Clayton paced the Raiders at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a single in the first inning, a double in the third, and another single in the sixth.
Bishop State struck first, plating three runs in the top of the first, but the Raiders responded quickly. Kayden Linares singled to right in the second inning to tie the game at three. After the Wildcats briefly reclaimed the lead in the top of the third, Northwest Florida answered with a four-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Anthony Quigley doubled home a run, Tristan King tripled to bring in two more, and Tristan Bittle followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Raiders in front for good.
Mikhai Grant earned the win on the mound, striking out eight while allowing four runs (three earned) over three innings. Alex Kruse was sharp in relief, tossing a scoreless inning while allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The Raiders finished with 16 hits in the game. Clayton and Angel Santiago each recorded three hits, while Quigley, Hunter Tarchalski, and King drove in two runs apiece.
Game Two: Shelton State 8, Northwest Florida 2
The nightcap saw Shelton State pull away late after a tight start.
An error gave the Buccaneers the game's first run in the third inning, but Northwest Florida answered in the bottom half as Angel Santiago singled to drive in the tying run. Shelton State regained the lead in the fourth with a two-run double and added two more runs in the sixth on a pair of doubles. A Raider error in the seventh pushed the lead to 8–1 before Northwest Florida scratched across one final run later in the inning.
Tucker Delisle started for the Raiders, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over 3.1 innings while striking out seven and walking two.
Offensively, Orlando Fernandez and Tristan King each collected two hits for Northwest Florida, hitting back-to-back in the lineup. Santiago and C.J. Murphy accounted for the Raiders' two RBIs in the loss.
