Raiders Gear Up for Midweek Clash Against Tallahassee

 

NICEVILLE, Fla. — Northwest Florida State men's and women's basketball return home Wednesday for a mid-week conference clash against Tallahassee State.

Northwest Florida women are coming off a bruising loss No. 1 ranked Chipola last Saturday, which saw the Raiders battle until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Northwest Florida men picked up their third straight win beating No. 13 Chipola 81-71.

Now both teams look for revenge against Tallahassee after both lost to the Eagles in their first meeting in Tallahassee earlier this month to open conference play.

Women's Game Notes

Last Week: 

Northwest Florida women's basketball went 1-1 on the week. The Raiders pulled off a gutsy road win at No. 9 Gulf Coast (60-54) Wednesday before falling to No. 1 Chipola at home Saturday (71-67), ending their 21-game home winning streak.

This Week:
The Raiders return home Wednesday to host Tallahassee State before getting a bye Saturday. The Eagles dropped the Raiders 61-59 in Tallahassee their first meeting. Northwest Florida is looking for revenge at home this time around.

The Opponent:
The Eagles are an offensive savvy team that shoots the ball efficiently from the field and from deep. The team is led by two-way sophomore Ashantay Noble who averages 13.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Right next to Noble is Kyana Poitier who is second in scoring at 12.7 points and leads the team in rebounding, averaging 9.3 boards per game. The Eagles are in the midst of a three-game skid, putting them at 1-3 in conference play.

NWF By the Numbers:
Northwest Florida boasts one of the nation's elite defenses, allowing just 47.5 points per game — the third-lowest mark in the country. The Raiders also hold opponents to 23.8 percent three-point shooting, ranking 13th nationally. Offensively, Northwest Florida has been just as effective, averaging 75.6 points per game (29th nationally) while ranking 2nd in field goal percentage (51.3%) and 16th in three-point percentage (34.7%).

Khoudia Diagne:
Freshman Khoudia Diagne has been Northwest Florida's most complete performer this season, leading the team in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg), and blocks (1.2 bpg). Diagne has scored in double figures in 17 games, including six outings with 20 or more points.

Jadah White:
Another freshman standout, Jadah White has been a reliable scorer for the Raiders this season, averaging 11.8 points on 46.0% shooting, including 35.5% from three.

Kamryn Corporan:
Corporan continues to be a key playmaker on both ends of the floor, averaging 5.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game. She also posted a career-high 12 rebounds in her last outing at Gulf Coast, and a career-high 12 assists in her last game against Chipola.

 

Men's Game Notes

Last Week:
The Raiders extended their winning streak to three-games after taking down No. 6 Gulf Coast on the road Wednesday (96-89), before beating No. 13 Chipola at home on Saturday (81-71), putting them in first place of the Panhandle standings.

This Week:
NWF men are back at home Wednesday against Tallahassee for their only game of the week. This will be a rematch of their Jan. 10 game which saw the Eagles take a 66-59 victory over the Raiders in Tallahassee.

The Opponent:
Tallahassee is one of the more balanced teams in the nation this season, top 50 in points scored, points allowed, three-point makes, attempts and percentage, opponents field goal and three-point percentage the team is led by dynamic scoring guard Shane Cherry who averages 18.7 points per game. Behind Cherry is Rodmik Allen at 12.2 points per game and Elijah Guillory at 11.5 points per game.

By the Numbers:
Northwest Florida has been one of the most efficient offensive teams in the NJCAA, averaging 85.7 points per game on 52.3 percent shooting (5th nationally) and 40.2 percent from three-point range (6th). The Raiders have eclipsed the 100-point mark six times this season and scored 90 or more in 12 games. Northwest Florida has also thrived in close contests, posting an 8–1 record in games decided by fewer than 10 points. The team is also 6-2 in games against ranked opponents this season including wins against four teams currently in the top 15.

Return of Shine:
Leading scorer DJ Shine returned to action last week after missing 10 games due to injury and has made an immediate impact. In three games, Shine has scored 55 points, including 25 at Gulf Coast and 23 against Chipola, earning him this week's FCSAA Player of the Week honors

Braylon Roman:
The Raiders' lone returner from last season, Braylon Roman remains a central figure in the offense. He ranks third on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game and leads the Raiders in assists (5.3) and steals (1.4) while shooting 51.8 percent from the field.

Justin Burns:
Sophomore transfer Justin Burns has been a steady force in the paint, averaging 13.8 points per game and leads the team with 7.6 rebounds per contest. Burns has scored in double figures in all but three games this season and has recorded seven or more rebounds in 16 games. This will also be his first time playing his former team this season.
