NICEVILLE, Fla. – Fifth-ranked Northwest Florida State women's basketball opens the 2019-20 season on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Raider arena against No. 20 Wabash Valley.
The Raiders enter the season coming off its second straight NJCAA Elite Eight appearance. Wabash Valley advanced to the 2018-19 Elite Eight as well.
"We're honored to be there [ranked No. 5]," Northwest Florida head coach Bart Walker said. "There are a lot of good teams in the Panhandle Conference and you're always going to have a target on your back in this league. We're just going to go out there and play."
Northwest Florida is ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA Preseason Poll, while Wabash Valley came in at No. 20. The Raiders spent 11 consecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2018-19. The program has won four straight season openers and three straight home openers.
Last season, NWF finished sixth in the NJCAA with a 46.8 field goal percentage, while Wabash Valley was seventh at 46.6 percent. The Raiders averaged 18.5 assists per game in 2018-19, 13th-best in the nation.
Over the last seven seasons, Northwest Florida is 70-8 at home. All sports combined, the Raiders are 399-77 (83.8 percent) at home since 2012-13.
